How to Reach Meghalaya

BY AIRWAYS: -

Shillong Airport, located 35 km away at Umroi, is a domestic airport that links the hill station with Kolkata via Air India regional flights. 

Another bigger and convenient airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati, which is approximately 130 km away from Shillong. MAWLYNNONG

Mawlynnong is a small village situated around 90 km from Shillong in the East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, and is also known as God’s own Garden. Mawlynnong village is a community-based eco-tourism initiative where the entire community made collective efforts in making and maintaining the cleanliness of the village.

DAWAKI

A small border town in the Jaintia Hills, Dawki, and its famed river Umngot or the Dwaki River is a must-visit if in Meghalaya. Sandwiched between India and Bangladesh, Dawki is a major center of trade between India and Bangladesh. The small city, besides being a trade hub is also famous for its tourism scene, with many people flocking to the town to experience a boat ride in its famed Umngot River and enjoy the nearby sights and sounds.

The city becomes a hotbed of tourist activities especially during the spring months as it hosts the boat riding competition on the Umngot River. The surrounding greenery, the cold water of the river, and the beautiful suspension bridge on the River Umngot make Dawki a place worth a visit.

DOUBLE DECKER LIVING ROOT

Hidden deep in the lush, green forests of the wettest place in India: Cherrapunjee, Meghalaya; one can find the magnificent Jingkieng Nongriat Double Decker Living Root Bridge; more commonly known as the Umshiang Double Decker Living Root Bridge or simply just the Double Decker Root Bridge.  This area is famous for root bridges made of Indian Rubber Tree, but the Double Decker Bridge is the most famous of all due to its large size. It is 3 kilometers long and placed at a height of 2400 feet! A unique attraction and quite an innovative mix of nature and engineering. The Umshiang River flows beneath the bridge.

MAWPHLANG

Around 45kms from Shillong, the Mawphlang Sacred Groves is situated in the East Khasi Hills. Once you reach the place, you can see rolling green plains, dense forests amidst the backdrop of blue sky. A sacred grove is a small forest area considered sacred by the Khasi tribe. The sacred grove usually has many medicinal plants and herbs and exotic plant species.

MAWLYNGOT

Mawlyngot is a beautiful village amidst the green and a serene atmosphere. Tea gardens, Tea factories are a place of interest here.

At about 45kms from Shillong; it leys the somnolent village in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. The locals believed that the people from the Indo-Bangladesh border had migrated down the River Umsong and settle down here. The early villagers cultivated corn, millet, potato, chili, and banana in low yields. 

KONGTHONG

Kongthong is a very interesting place in Meghalaya. Situated between two famous ridges, getting to Kongthong by trekking there from either the Pynursla or the Sohra ridge is an adventure. The unique culture of Kongthong’s inhabitants is they do not call out each other using their names, they instead sing out names that are given to every individual of the village in childhood.

UMDEN

Umden is satiated in the Ri-Bhoi district and is known for its Eri silk production. Here you can witness all the steps in sericulture starting from the rearing of silkworms to spinning and reeling of silk to yarn production and dyeing and finally to weaving. The village itself is really beautiful nestled in a serene valley.

NONGKHNUM ISLAND

The road to Nongkhnum Island is long, but the view that you get here compensates all your trouble. It is the largest river island in Meghalaya and is situated near Nongstoin. The island with the clear water of the river is a serene place with hardly any soul. The road to Nongkhnum Island is really bad.

GARI HILLS

Situated close to the Indo-Bangladesh Border, the Garo hills are part of the Patkai hill range, which extends across the Indo-Myanmar border. The hills get their name from the Garo tribe who inhabit the area. The Garo Hills, spanning 8000 sq meters of area, offers magnificent viewpoints, densely populated with subtropical forests and rare endemic species of animals and birds. For ease of administration, the area has been divided into five districts: the East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, and the South West Garo Hills. The Nokrek peak is the highest peak of this hill range, but the Arabella hills and the Tura peak also offer some breathtaking scenery. The Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, one of the most important national parks with international importance, is located in this nature-rich area. The hills are also decked with splendid waterfalls, enriching the ecological coherence of the place.

JAINTIA HILLS

Part of the former Jaintia Kingdom, the Jaintia Hills is a land of majestic hills filled with rich natural vegetation and mineral deposits. It is situated in Meghalaya and is part of the Patkai hill range that extends across the Indo-Myanmar borders. A relatively smaller hill district as compared to the Khasi and Garo Hills, the Jaintia Hills still amazes travelers with its pristine lakes and lush greenery. Jowai, the administrative headquarters, is the most developed town in this region and is the only place connected to other towns outside the hills. The Jaintia hills comprise of two districts: the East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills.

KYLLANG ROCK:

Some 78 km away from Shillong, a unique giant rock made out of red granite, Kyllang Rock is a giant dome placed in the West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. The Rock which is 5400 ft above sea level and has a width of around 1000 ft is a mammoth block of granite that is part of the Khasi folklore and seems beautiful in its shape. A hike to the top of Kyllang Rock allows you to treasure the marvelous landscape of the surrounding area.

Surrounded by age-old Red Rhododendrons, Kyllang Rock is said to have a special magnetic field that makes sure that people don’t fall off it. The mammoth dome is inaccessible from its southern side whereas the northern side is full of rhododendrons and bushes.

HERE IS THE FAIRS & FESTIVALS OF MEGHALAYA:

SHAD SUK MYNSIEM: The Shad Suk Mynsiem is celebrated in April. The rituals or ceremonies are conducted by individual family clans or the Khasi state (Hima). The dance is performed to signify the matrilineal and patrilineal structure of the Khasi society. The dance is performed by unmarried girls dressed in their traditional best, dancing in slow painful steps with coyness; while the man circles the women in their lashing out swords and whips. The significance of the dance is that a man is the protector of a woman's honor. The Dance is performed at the Wiking Grounds near the capital city of Shillong and other places.

NONGKREM DANCE FESTIVAL: The most important of festivals among the Khasis, the Nongkrem Festival is celebrated every year at Smit, 15 km away from Shillong. It is an essential seat of the Hima Khyriem (Chief of Khyriem). The rituals are performed by the Syiem, the head of the Khasi state, and ka Syiem Sad (head priestess) who is revered as the caretaker of the ceremonies and the people. The festival is celebrated for a good harvest, peace, and prosperity. People from all over the country and the world come to witness the celebration that is accompanied by young women performing the Shad Kynthei and the men circling them performing the Shad Mystieh, as a symbol of male power and protection over the women.

BEH DEIN KHLAM: One of the most important festivals of the Jaintia people is the Behdeinkhlam Festival. It is celebrated by the people of the Niamtre religion. It is celebrated in July before the seed sowing season. The literal meaning of Behdeinkhlam is 'Chasing away the Plague'. Rituals and sacrifices are made by the priest accompanied by the beating of drums and flutes. Tall minarets are paraded to the holy ground and are then submerged in a river. Men, both old and young accompany the drums and flutes with dance while the women stand watch in their finest traditional and heavily decked in gold. The main event is the wrestling of a tree trunk that is chosen with the care it is said to bring good luck to whoever touches it. The festival is celebrated every year at Jowai Town and other villages of the Jaintia hills. People from all over the country and the world come to witness this colorful and bewitching festival.

SHAD SUKRA: The Shad Sukra is celebrated by the Jaintia people every year in April or May. It is a celebration before the sowing season. Every Jaintia farmer waits for this festival before he can begin the sowing of seeds. Rituals and dance are accompanied by the drums and the flute to pray for a bountiful and fruitful season. Men and Women take part in the festivals in their traditional best, heavily decked in gold ornaments. One can go and witness this opulence of culture at Jowai Town, West Jaintia Hills. The town is situated 64 km away from the capital city of Shillong.

LAHOO DANCE: The Lahoo Dance is performed by both males and females for entertainment. Attired in their best finery, usually two young men on either side of a woman, holding arms together dance in step. In place of the usual drum and pipe, a cheerleader, usually a man gifted with the talent of impromptu recitation, recites couplets to the merriment of the audience

WANGALA FESTIVAL: The Wangala festival is one of the most important festivals of the Garo people. It is a post-harvest festival celebrated to mark the end of the agricultural year. It is a thanksgiving festival to the god of fertility, known as Misi-A-Gilpa-Saljong-Galapa. Today it is popularly known as The Hundred Drums festival. Accompanied by the cries of the leading warrior, he leads the boys and girls to synchronized dance steps with hand and heads gesturing movements. The festival is celebrated from September and December at popular places across Garo Hills. If one wishes to witness the truly traditional way of celebration by the Garo people who are still practicing the old religion, they can be found at 'Songsarek' (animistic) villages like Sadolpara in West Garo Hills. The modern more commercialized version of the festival is celebrated at Asasang village in West Garo Hills. The state-sponsored festivals attract local, national and foreign tourists who come to be entertained by the dance competitions, gorge themselves on local food and drinks made from fermented rice popularly called Rice Beer.

  • RANIKOR FESTIVAL: The Mawkyrwat Sub Divisional Officers Welfare Association, (MSDOWA) Mawkyrwat organized the first Beach Festival at Ranikor on the 23 and 24 February 2007. The various activities organized on the two days of the festival were:

(NOTE: Each member opting for Shillong Meghalaya Package Tour should carry an original Voter Card or Passport or Driving License (Pan Card and Aadhar Card are not valid) along with four copies of Xerox and 3 copies of passport size photographs. In the case of the child, you can carry School ID proof and a Birth certificate along with photographs.)

REMARKS:

  • In case any sightseeing is not done due to weekly closure, alternative sightseeing will be done for the same.
  • The tour price mentioned for this tour is for Indian nationals only.

  • NRIs and Foreign nationals please ensure proper identity is conveyed to the booking executive at the time of booking and all details along with passport copies are handed over to the booking executive.
  • The Standard Check-in and check-out time of hotels in India is generally 12.30 PM and 11 AM respectively.

TRAVEL TIPS:
  • For convenience make a reservation of hotels, transport, and local sightseeing of the city and journey on Luxury Trains.
  • Carrying an authorized map of the State and City to which you are traveling.
  • Carry woolen clothes in winter and walking shoes for all seasons.
  • Carrying all essential medicines as advised by your doctor.
  • Travel insurance can protect you from any unseen hazards.
  • Avoid taking the services of unknown and unauthorized guides/touts.
  • Avoid heavy baggage and prefer to use lightweight bags with wheels to avoid any inconvenience.
  • Inform your allergies and food habits in the hotel or restaurant before you order meals or beverages.
  • Avoid carrying expensive items like jewelry, gold, and valuables of high worth.
  • Make purchases from authorized shops and take proper vouchers of purchases made with telephone numbers and identification of salesman or owner of the shop.
  • Carrying safe drinking water and dry eatables while traveling.

  • Always carry a photocopy of your travel documents i.e. Passport, Visa, or Travel Pass, and inform the police immediately of the loss of any of such documents.
  • Give a proper wake-up call at hotel reception as and when you have to catch the early morning or late night connecting Bus or Train.
  • Avoid getting extra familiar with hotel staff or any other guests during your stay and in case of any abnormal or indecent behavior, report to Hotel Manager or THPL Customer Support Mobile number
  • Avoid booking tickets or hotel bookings through unauthorized agents.
Terms & Conditions
CANCELLATION POLICY:

In the event of cancellation of tour/travel services due to any avoidable/unavoidable reason/s, we must be notified of the same in writing. Cancellation charges will be effective from the date we receive advice in writing, and cancellation charges would be as follows:

60 days before arrival: 10% of the Tour/service cost
45 days before arrival: 20% of the Tour/service cost
15 days before arrival: 25% of the Tour/service cost
10 days before arrival: 50% of the Tour/service cost

07 days before arrival: Non Refundable

NOTE: In the case of Special Trains Journeys and peak season hotel bookings a separate cancellation policy is applicable (which can be advised as and when required).

SOME CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICIES ARE OUT OF OUR TENDER:

Refund for hotel payment will follow the hotel’s cancellation policy
Train tickets cancellations will follow the Railway’s policy
Flight tickets cancellations will follow the airline’s company policy

In case you cancel the trip after commencement, refund would be restricted to a limited amount only which too would depend on the amount that we would be able to recover from the hoteliers/ contractors we patronize. For unused hotel accommodation, chartered transportation & missed meals, etc. we do not bear any responsibility to refund.

OUR LIABILITIES & LIMITATIONS:
  1. Please note that after the finalization of the Tour/ service Cost, if there are any Hike in entrance fees of monuments/museums, Taxes, fuel cost, or guide charges – the same would be charged as extra.
  2. As per the Government directive, you are requested to produce your photo identity document such as Driving License/Voter ID Card/Passport/Ration Card at the point of check-in at the hotel. We appreciate your cooperation.
  3. In case of the non-availability of requested hotels/hotels, we will provide accommodation in a similar category of hotel/hotels.
  4. If there is any unavoidable incident occur during the tour, Travotic will not be labile for any responsibility
  5. There will be no refund for any No Show / Unutilized services.
  6. The itinerary may be modifying based on various factors like maintenance of monuments/museums/major like spots conventions, religious festivals, etc.
  7. Itinerary timings on the tour are approximate and may be subject to change.
  8. Transfers and sightseeing on a SIC basis mean transport through a comfortable coach/bus/van depending on the total number of passengers traveling with you on that same tour. Please note that Travotic Holidays will be putting together all the passengers arriving around the same time and dropping them at their respective hotels. You may talk to our holiday experts about private transfers/ transport facilities, which will be made available at an additional cost.
  9. The customer needs to avail of the SIC from the scheduled pick-up point at the scheduled time. Travotic Holidays are not responsible if the pick-up is missed due to the customer’s delay.
  10. All personal extras such as laundry, room service, alcohol, minibar, telephone bills, pre-paid or post-paid SIM cards, etc. will be on a direct payment basis by the traveler to the service provider & Travotic Holidays will not be liable for the same at any point of time.
Payment Details

For all the services contracted, a 25% advance payment should be made to hold the booking, on a confirmed basis & for flight ticket booking need full actual fare. The balance amounts need to be paid 10days before the commencement of the services. Management personnel holds the right to decide upon the amount to be paid as advance payment, based on the nature of the service & the time left for the commencement of the service.

Apart from the above in some cases like Special Train Journeys, hotels, or resorts bookings during the peak season (like X-Mas, New Year, Puja, Diwali), a 50% advance payment should be made to hold the booking and 20days before full payment is required to be paid.

Note: Above mentioned payment policy may change during peak season.
